Interview with Anita Graf, August 22, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Anita Graf served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1995 to 1997 as an Agro-Forestry Volunteer. Anita’s mother served in the first Peace Corps group in Brazil in 1961, and her father served in a subsequent group. Anita applied to Peace Corps after completing graduate school. Her training was conducted in Santo Domingo, and consisted of history, culture, Spanish, practical skills, and sector specific training. Anita’s assignment was loosely tied to a church organization in Pedernales, and she lived in La Altagracia, near the Haitian border. She developed a friendship and working relationship with one particular farmer, and together they terraced land and planted fruit trees. In her second year she expanded her impact by teaching permaculture practices to other farmers. She developed close friendships with neighborhood youth and tried to expand their knowledge of the world outside their community. Anita married a Dominican man during her service. She remains in close contact with Dominican friends via social media.
