Project: Frontier Nursing Service Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Godfrey Shell was born at Chappell in Leslie County in 1927. Both informants tell of music played at home and of socializing after "workings." Mountain funerals and local preachers are also discussed. After leaving school, Godfrey Shell worked at farming and in the coal mines. His family got along well during the Great Depression because they raised and canned their own food. Stella Shell adds that plenty of wild meat was also available.
