Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Lily Egan Served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cambodia from 2019 to 2020, in the education program. Lily was introduced to Peace Corps by an RPCV guest speaker at Eastern Connecticut State University. After graduating she served in AmeriCorps at the East Bend Boys and Girls Club in Bend Oregon as an Education Coordinator. She then taught English in Catalonia for a year, before applying to Peace Corps. She was selected for Cambodia K-13 training cohort. Training in Takéo Cambodia included Khmer language, culture, and teaching skills. Lily was assigned to Prei Nhi Primary School in Pursat to teach English to both students and teachers. She also formed an after school English club for teachers. Lily was evacuated in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She remains in contact with her Cambodian counterparts. She conducted English club meetings online for several months, and participated in Khmer language classes online with Peace Corps Cambodia staff for about a year after evacuation. Lily earned a masters degree in strategic communications from American University. She currently works at the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University.
