Interview Summary
Theodore "Ted" Bates (1923- ) is the owner of the Ted Bates Farm, a farm located in Lexington, Kentucky that boards, breeds, and sells Thoroughbreds. In this interview, Bates discusses growing up in Eminence, Kentucky and attending the University of Kentucky for agriculture. He shares stories from working on several horse farms in the 1950s and 1960s, including Calumet Farm. Bates also speaks about the challenges of being the general manager of Fasig-Tipton when the company returned to Kentucky in the early 1970s. He also talks about traveling internationally to attend horse sales while at Fasig-Tipton.
