Interview Summary
Rick Bell discusses the Kentucky Kernel, the official newspaper of the University of Kentucky. He talks about Kernel employees, as well as their numerous awards and achievements. He talks about the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, integration, and each event's coverage (or lack thereof) in the Kentucky Kernel. He discusses students' reactions to the Vietnam War on UK's campus, including the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). Bell discusses how the University of Kentucky lost to Texas Western in the 1966 NCAA finals, in which Texas Western played an all-African American starting squad against UK's all-white team.Interview Accession
