Interview Summary

Abby Marlatt describes her childhood in Manhattan, Kansas. When she was five years old she entered a music class for children at Kansas State College through which she learned to play the piano. Marlatt states that she took music classes through high school. She recalls that in their grade school classes they learned to play various types of instruments, and in junior high school she graduated from violin to viola. Marlatt states that she was also a member of the Girl Scouts as a child, and describes going camping with the Girl Scouts. Marlatt states that she grew up in the Methodist Church and her parents were Republicans who were critical of the New Deal. She recalls trips she took as a child to California and to Chicago. She states that she did not date during high school, but mentions relationships with men as an adult. Marlatt describes her "most longstanding" relationship with Ms. Norma Perry.
