Interview Summary
Charles W. Harris is an African American political scientist and a Professor Emeritus at Howard University. In this interview, Harris describes his childhood in Auburn, Alabama and earning degrees in political science from Morehouse College, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He talks about his dissertation topic on German confiscation of German property and his work at the Federal Executive Institute, where he became interested in intergovernmental relations. Harris speaks about his academic career and positions he held at Grambling State, Coppin State and finally Howard University, where he began in 1970. He also discusses chairing the Howard University Political Science Department and receiving a Ford Foundation grant to increase faculty, research and strengthen the graduate program.Interview Accession
