Interview with Julie Devaud, August 27, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Julie Devaud served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Poland, from 1991 through 1993, in the Education Program. Prior to joining Peace Corps, Julie worked at the American Psychological Association, and as a lobbyist for women’s groups in Washington DC. She wanted to get back to grass roots organizing, and recalled Peace Corps slogan “the toughest job you’ll ever love”. Julie’s training and home-stay took place in Konstancin. Julie was assigned to teach English at a high school in Jasło. She was the only American there during her first year. Julie worked with other volunteers to start the first Women In Development committee in Eastern Europe. They organized two national conferences. Julie stayed for a year after completion of service, teaching at an English Teachers’ Training College in Krosno. The interview includes discussion of challenges faced being gay, and Jewish, in Poland. Julie feels a deep connection with Poland. She has shared her experience with students at Peace Corps Days, and knows that some of them joined because of it.Interview Accession
