Project: Goin' North: Tales of the Great Migration Oral History Project
Interview Summary
William Steffens (b. 1897) was born to Fannie and Manuel Steffens in Jacksonville, Florida. He and his family remained in Jacksonville until 1917 when the family gradually made their way North. Life in Jacksonville exposed Steffens to discrimination and racial violence at an early age, and as he grew up his awareness of racism grew with him, ultimately leading him to make his own journey North in 1917, after which he worked a variety of jobs.Interview Accession
