Interview Summary

Harold Rice discusses his early history, including his time in the Army and his life as a farmer. Rice explains cropping seasons, the work that it takes to prepare cotton, and the help needed to harvest crops which at times included Mexican laborers. He recalls his experiences as a sharecropper in Kentucky as well as his work as a day laborer during the growing season. Rice reflects on why individuals left farming to work in the factories, which mainly occurred during difficult economic conditions. Rice talks about the importance of emancipation and how it was celebrated annually. Rice discusses the reasons for changes in the cotton market and what he believes is the future of farming.
