Interview Summary

Joseph H. McKinley, Jr. is Senior District Judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.

In this interview, Judge McKinley shares stories about his legal and judicial career, from working at his father's law firm McKinley & Howard, to his two decades of service as a federal district court judge in Owensboro, Kentucky. He also discusses his work as a Daviess County prosecutor and winning election to become a judge on Kentucky Circuit Court for the Sixth Judicial District.

Born and raised in Owensboro, Kentucky, Judge McKinley received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 from the University of Kentucky. He received his Juris Doctor in 1979 from the University of Louisvilleā€™s Brandeis School of Law. Thereafter, McKinley worked in private practice, served as a trustee at a local bank, and served as commissioner on the Kentucky Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. On May 24, 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated him to a seat on the Western District Court of Kentucky that was vacated by Judge Ronald E. Meredith. The United States Senate confirmed him on August 11, 1995. McKinley primarily oversees the federal docket in Owensboro.
