Interview Summary

Dr. John Oswald was president of the University of Kentucky from 1963-1968. In this interview he discusses the decision to put all of the community colleges in Kentucky under the control of the University of Kentucky, as well as the creation of new community colleges in the state. He talks about the politics involved in choosing the locations of the colleges, and the relationship between the colleges and the main UK campus. He discusses the attitudes towards the community colleges and the quality of education available there. Oswald discusses the organizational structure of the university and community colleges. He talks about his goal of providing access to higher education to remote areas of Kentucky.

Oswald discusses the social attitudes prevalent during his tenure as president of the University of Kentucky, as well as the major national events occurring at the time, including the civil rights movement and the War on Poverty.
