Interview Summary
James C. Phelps volunteered for the Army and served as a platoon leader in the 12th Armored ("Hellcat") Division. He first encountered enemy fire on the Maginot Line in Alsace, and was later involved in several battles to secure the Alsatian town of Herrlisheim. Phelps spends most of his interview discussing his efforts in Herrlisheim, for which he received a Bronze Star and a battlefield commission. He briefly mentions battles in Saarbrucken and the Colmar Pocket, then describes leading the Third Army to the Rhine River. He was in Germany near the end of the war, and remarks on the friendliness of German civilians and the horrors of the Dachau concentration camp.Interview Accession
