Interview Summary

Elizabeth Theophila “Toppy” Oexmann Murrell was born on March 31, 1947 in Owensboro, Kentucky the James Richard Oexmann and Theophila Joan Coplin-Griffiths Oexmann. Her parents married during WWII and her mother was British. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 1964 where she majored in architecture and met her future husband, William “Billy” Murrell, and graduated in 1971. In this interview she discusses her experiences on campus in 1965 including sexual liberation, campus fashion, fraternities, and the start of the Vietnam War.
