Interview with Dean Phelps, June 7, 2016
Project: Sara Holroyd Oral History Project
Interview Summary
In his interview with Breeding and Collins, Phelps discusses his short time as a student at UK; in the School of Music. Despite the brevity of his time here, Holroyd still made a lasting impression on him that has spanned a lifetime. He now employs the compassion, love of music, and discipline he learned from Holroyd in his work as a Minister. The focus of Phelps's interview was his time performing at the Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, Ky; where he first heard the song "Simple Gifts". Phelps details how that song allowed Collins to connect to him on the internet and how that connection lead to his performance at Holroyd's tribute concert. Phelps finishes out the interview with his performance of the aforementioned piece.
