Interview Summary

Fiston Boyita Bo Malenga was born in Mbandaka, Democratic Republic of Congo in 1981 where he attended his early years of primary school. He lived with his grandparents, and because his grandfather worked for the government and was often reassigned, he attended several different schools before graduating from secondary school in Kinshasa. After his American father with whom he reconnected after 18 years was unable to obtain a U.S. visa for him, he began university in Burkina Faso. He got a Diversity Lottery Visa in 2006 and came to Kentucky in 2008. Fiston attended several months of ESL classes and courses at Jefferson Community College and worked at UPS for four years. He now works as an electrician and hopes to complete his college education and someday get other Americans interested in a project in Congo.
