Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Mark Heisey served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 2009-2011 in a Community Environmental Development and Education program. He discusses his motivation to join the Peace Corps and a medical issue that delayed his acceptance and assignment to a country. He talks about host families with whom he lived during training and initially after placement and the friendliness and generosity of Dominicans. He discusses projects he worked on with a women’s group, an environmental youth group, US medical missions and projects that didn’t pan out. He says that he was there more on a personal journey than trying to save the world. He says the most important impact of Peace Corps was on broadening his perspective on life, recognizing that there are different ways to be happy. He discusses his continuing contacts with Dominicans says the Dominican Republic is one of his favorite places to visit.
