Interview Summary

This interview with producer and Columbia Records executive George Avakian begins with a discussion of his background and childhood. It then moves on to talk about his early career in radio transcription. Schmidt Horning and Avakian then discuss various record labels and books on the history of recording.

Avakian discusses the development of the long-playing record. He then talks about the recording venues available to him during his time at Columbia Records. The interview ends with a discussion on tape recording and other audio engineers, and the difficulties in getting a wide range of sound on long-playing records.
