Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Judith Anderson served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador from 1967 through 1969. Values of citizenship and community service were important in her family, and Judith had an interest in Peace Corps since high school. She and her husband applied while attending the University of Minnesota. Language, culture, and technical training were conducted at Montana State University. Training included a homestay with as Spanish speaking family in Flagstaff Arizona. Their initial assignment was in Daule. After several months they transferred to Manta. There Judith became involved in many community projects, including starting a well-baby clinic, a Girl Scout group, and a day camp for kids with a Rotary International Grant. She also did community outreach and family planning education for a birth control clinic. In their second year they moved to Cuenca, where she helped start an artisan cooperative. In the later part of their service, they helped to establish San Carlos, a new colony for homesteaders on the east side of the Andes. The interview discusses Judith’s work; living situations; and the impact Peace Corps service has had on her life.
