Interview Summary
Born and raised on a farm, Mr. Coleman has worked at the Avon Army Depot, run his own restaurant in Lexington, "Ben's Kitchen," and has been employed as a chauffeur. His experiences as a chauffeur in Chicago and New York included run-ins with gangsters and he remembers his former employer, Mr. Fountain. He recalls his parents' educational background, Sunday dinners during his childhood, and funeral customs of the 1920s and 1930s. He talks about the influence of the church in African American society, and differentiates between old-time preachers and those of the 1980s.Interview Accession
