Interview Summary

Dr. Frank J. Welch became Dean and Director of the College of Agriculture after Dr. Thomas Cooper retired in 1951. In this interview he discusses accepting the position at the University of Kentucky and his impressions of the university. He talks about the faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture, as well as the administration of the University of Kentucky as a whole. He talks about how the College of Agriculture was funded and how that changed during his time at the university. He discusses the students in the College of Agriculture, including African Americans and women.

Welch discusses campus facilities, and issues at the university including expansion, athletics, and the emphasis on research over teaching. He talks about tobacco research and the controversy over Kentucky 31 Fescue grass seed.
