Interview Summary
Hanly M. Davis served as a torpedoman aboard the USS Becuna, a submarine that went on six war patrols and sank at least twenty ships. Davis focuses primarily on the first war patrol, when the Becuna was attacked by a Japanese convoy near Formosa. He describes the experience of a depth charge attack, then discusses the psychological requirements for submarine duty. He also describes the submarine itself, the general procedure for an attack, and a specific attack on Japanese ships near Iwo Jima.Interview Accession
