Project: Kentucky Writers Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jim Hall discusses his friendship with the poet M.S. Merwin. He also discusses Merwin's influence upon his own work. The friendship began in the late 1970s, when Hall was director of UK's writing program, and he invited Merwin to come to the university for a reading. The two poets formed a friendship based on their common interests in poetry and Zen Buddhism. Hall was later best man at Merwin's wedding to his wife Paula, with whom Hall's wife, Mary Ann Taylor-Hall, is also very close.
