Interview Summary

Mae C. King is an African American political scientist and Professor in the Department of Political Science at Howard University. In this interview, King describes growing up in rural Arkansas, attending Bishop College, and her early interest in politics and religious studies. She discusses being a student demonstrator during the Civil Rights Movement and getting arrested in 1960 for her participation in a sit-in. King speaks about receiving her Ph.D. at University of Idaho in 1968 and living in Nigeria for fourteen years, where she taught and researched African politics. Her experiences as the first black and the first woman to be on the staff of the American Political Science Association and a founding member of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists are also discussed.
