Interview Summary

Herb Meade was the community action chairman for his district in Mingo County, West Virginia during the War on Poverty in the 1960s. In this interview he discusses how he became involved with the Appalachian Volunteers and community action. He talks about the practice of vote buying in parts of West Virginia and how it became to be seen as a normal occurrence. He talks about the work done by the Fair Elections Committee to clean up the voter rolls and the opposition they faced while trying to do so. He talks specifically about Noah Floyd's involvement with voter fraud. He discusses the relationship between community action groups and the Appalachian Volunteers. He discusses the history of land ownership in West Virginia.
