Interview Summary

Professor Charles P. Roland conducts an interview with former U.S. Senator and Kentucky governor Albert B. "Happy" Chandler. The interview is being conducted in order for Roland to obtain narrative information about Chandler's life and political activity for a biography. Chandler discusses his participation in national politics, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. He talks about the various presidential candidates he supported and opposed during his time on the Democratic National Committee, particularly in the 1960 presidential campaign. He details information about his second administration as governor of Kentucky, from 1956-1960. Chandler tells Roland about his relationship with the Kennedy family and his political activities in supporting John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1960. Chandler talks about his opposition to Nixon and Humphrey during the 1968 presidential election, discussing why he had no strong positive feelings about either candidate.
