Interview Summary

Michael Bandiera served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador, from 1968 through 1971, in the Community Development / Agrarian Reform Program. Michael applied to Peace Corps while attending UCLA. He was highly motivated to help others, as well as to improve his Spanish and learn about Community Development. Bandiera’s Peace Corps job involved establishing new agricultural communities by recruiting farmers to resettle in more productive areas. He worked with Centro de Reconversion Economica del Azuay (CREA). He also coordinated with CARITAS Catholic relief organization. Along with local counterparts, he identified water sources, surveyed sites, planned villages, and assisted with resettlement. Several years after Peace Corps service, he became involved with Children’s Dental Care International, and created programs in Ecuador and Nicaragua.
