Interview Summary

Mr. Nickens recalls his family history, educational background and attendance at Wilberforce College. He discourses on discrimination encountered by African Americans in Decatur, Illinois, employment opportunities for African Americans at the turn of the century, and living conditions for African Americans both in Detroit and in Lexington. Mr. Nickens reminisces about his experiences in New York City from 1916-1920, and recounts his career in the insurance industry.
