Project Summary

In this collection of interviews, interviewees discuss growing up in a segregated Louisville, the nature and extent of this segregation, the nature and palpability of race-based discrimination in Louisville juxtaposed against the more intense discrimination experienced in the Deep South, and black access to public accommodations and their quality. They talk about the racial and socio-economic compositions of their neighborhoods and how these compositions changed across time. They also discuss, in detail, the nature of their personal involvement in and overall experience of the Louisville open housing movement and protest of 1967.
