Interview with Martin "Marty" Adler, October 29, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Martin "Marty" Adler served in the Dominican Republic (DR), 1966-1969, working in Urban Community Development after training at Cal State LA and field training in Puerto Rico. While PC volunteers in Santo Domingo’s barrios were looked on with suspicion, Marty found acceptance after giving first aid to a hurt child. Projects included English classes, a Boy Scout troop, and, eventually, a one-room primary school. In his second year, Marty worked for the Dominican Development Foundation in towns of the Capital region, organizing groups that received small loans for community projects. In his third year Marty assisted in the placement and supervision of new volunteers. After the DR, Marty, got an MA in International Communication from AU, worked for PC Washington, and then, for twenty years, mostly overseas, was with the US Information Agency. Marty says Dominicans taught him joy, while PC enabled him to function effectively in other cultures.
