Interview with Logan Brennan, November 14, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Logan Brennan served in Ukraine from 2011-2013 in Education. He joined with his wife who had always wanted to be in the Peace Corps. He had just completed his master’s in education and she was beginning her career in teaching. Because they had private student loans, they saved up money to continue paying them while in service. Their host family during training in the city of Chernihiv were experienced PC hosts who had a backyard farm. They learned Russian for their site in Melitopol, where Kerry taught English in an elementary school and Logan taught in a private technical college. After some uncertainty about their decision to serve, they grew to love the Ukraine and said ‘yes’ to everything, going to different social events and having several secondary projects, including children’s summer camps on the Azov Sea. They would have extended their service, but needed to return to keep paying loans. Logan was in Kyiv during the Maidan protests and caught a piece of the last Lenin statue as it was being torn down. His experience in Ukraine led him to his career as an adult educator. He and his wife dream of rejoining PC when they retire.
