Interview with Michael L. Mannix, January 14, 2024

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Michael Mannix served in Nepal, 1990-1992, as an elementary math/science teacher. He was in his mid-twenties working as an engineer when he applied to PC. In-country training was excellent. He was posted a couple hours from Pokhara at Sri Shanti Udaya Secondary School, teaching elementary grades during his first year, and assisting with teacher training in his second year. During this time he lived with a host family. While there, electricity was introduced into his family's home; the change was profound. Michael married another PCV after the first year of service. At their wedding, their heads were knocked together by a well-meaning villager to rid them of future pain. They served in different villages 100 miles apart. After returning to the US, the couple worked in Asia and the South Pacific for seven years with Habitat for Humanity. Strong ties to PC friends and Nepali family still remain.
