Interview Summary

Dr. Carl Watson was the first African American admitted to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed his residency and graduated in 1964. He went on to have an obstetrics and gynecology practice in California.

Carl W. Watson reflects on his life as an African American in Kentucky, growing up and attending grade school before desegregation, attending an HBCU, and being the only black man in UK's first medical school class. He talks about the racism he experienced and witnessed, particularly at UK and at UK basketball games. He worked as a physician during the Vietnam War. He also raised a family that he was proud of.
