Interview with Eric Wagner, July 11, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Eric Wagner served as a Peace Corps Aquaculture volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1983-1986. Originally from Rochester, NY he was working at the Division of Wildlife in Colorado when he applied to the Peace Corps. Initial training was near Fort Pierce in Florida and emphasized technical aquaculture training. After arriving in-country, training consisted of language and culture. His first site was in Las Cabuyas where he worked on a shrimp farming project with the NGO CARE. Due to challenges in the management of the project, it was shut down. He then moved to Bayaguana for his second year where he taught aquaculture at the Universidad Central Del Este, extending his service for six months to finish out the school year. Upon returning to the US he got his graduate degree in Fisheries Science from the University of Idaho and has continued working in aquaculture in Delaware, Oregon and Utah, where he currently lives.
