Interview Summary

Colman McCarthy, the director of Center for Teaching Peace in Washington, D.C., discusses Merton status as a mythical figure. McCarthy describes Merton as an activist who rebelled against what people thought he should write about, and a "public monk" who communicated with the outside world. He discusses Merton's antiwar position while also delving into the "Just War" position of the Catholic Church and goes over Merton's legacy.
