Interview Summary

Sylvia Nixon grew up in Cincinnati’s East End on Corbin and Saint Peters Streets in a house her father built by the Ohio River. Persistent river flooding forced the family to move to Over-the-Rhine in 1967 where they rented an apartment from the Denhart family. Nixon talks about working in Dr. Reid’s office at General Hospital and as a ‘money cleaner’ for the banking system. She also mentions playing concert and jazz violin, performing with The Cohesions. She reflects on the Black theatres that used to be where the Duke Energy Center is now and touches on the lines of segregation that prevented African-Americans from crossing beyond Ninth Street and Central at that time.
