Interview with Jennie Davis, October 15, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jennie Davis was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal from 2011 to 2013 in Community Development. Jennie joined after working in Finance for a few years. Her mother was from Ghana, where her dad was a Peace Corps Volunteer, so she grew up knowing how important the Peace Corps is in her family’s lives. The training was in Thiès, where Jennie learned French, Woolof, and more. She lived with host families in training and at her ocean-side site in M’boro. Jennie worked with women’s artisan groups on finance and with a leather artisan, but mostly, she did education projects. She led Junior Achievement sessions at several schools, helped students get scholarships to continue in school, and was one of the leads for the Regional Girl’s Camp. Jennie traveled throughout the country and loved the sights and sounds of Senegal. Leaving was difficult, and she talked about her experience at many schools in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. She encourages others to join to expand their awareness and acceptance of the world and their community.
