Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jessica Pic served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mongolia from 2007 to 2009 as an English Teacher (TEFL). Jessica applied to Peace Corps during her junior year at William and Mary College. She interviewed in person, and was selected for training group M-18. Their training was conducted in Dulaankhaan. It included Mongolian language, and teaching skills. Jessica was assigned to teach English at a secondary school in Khoroolol, a suburb of Sukhbaatar, in Selenge. Secondary projects included English training for fellow teachers, English classes for hospital staff, public health methodology training, and volunteering at an orphanage. After completing her service, Jessica remained in Mongolia for a year, teaching at a private school in Ulan Bator. Peace Corps had a profound impact on Jessica’s view of the world, and taught her to be creative and resourceful. After returning home she earned a Master’s Degree in Documentary Film. She continues to feel a deep connection with people she worked with in Mongolia.
