Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Allister Stanton served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in three countries: Rwanda 2010-2012; Ethiopia 2016-2018; Uganda 2019-2020. He also served in the U.S. as a Peace Corps Response COVID19 volunteer in 2021. Allister applied to Peace Corps after completing undergraduate studies at New College of California and Green Mountain College. He was selected to serve with cohort Rwanda 70. Training was conducted in Nyanza, and included Kinyarwanda language. Allister was assigned to teach English and Computer Skills at Ecole Secondaire Kagogo (now Mugano School), near Lake Burera. In addition to teaching, he helped organize Camp GLOW and Camp BE. His service was terminated early by Peace Corps due to safety concerns. While nearly completing a graduate program, he applied to Peace Corps again and was selected for Ethiopia. Training language was Amharic. He was initially assigned to a location near Chebura-Curchura National Park, but was relocated by Peace Corps to Wushwush due to site access / transportation difficulties. He taught at a secondary school, and as a secondary project conducted classes at a church that were open to the community. After successfully completing his service, Allister completed his Masters Program, reapplied, and was selected for Uganda. His Uganda service was cut short due to the COVID19 evacuation. Allister currently resides in Nairobi Kenya, where he works with an NGO serving displaced persons.
