Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
James "Jim" McGeorge served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, from 1968 through 1971, in the Education, and Rural Self Help Construction Programs. Jim learned about Peace Corps in High School, and decided to apply after meeting a recruiter at the University of Arizona. He was invited to serve in Liberia, with Liberia 15, the second group to receive training in-country. After a brief stay with volunteers in Konia, Lofa County, Jim attended training at the Zorzor Rural Teacher Training Institute, and Loma language training in Borkeza. Jim was assigned to a K-9 school in Zorzor. He taught math, coached basketball, and was the 9th grade advisor. Jim got involved with the Rural Self Help Construction Program to construct a basketball court at his school and expand the local hospital. During vacation, he assisted with administering vaccinations in outlying villages. In his second year Jim was called to report for a draft physical. He was not drafted, and extended for a third year, working exclusively in the Rural Self Help Construction Program. He met his wife in Liberia, and both continue to be involved with Friends of Liberia, and projects there.Interview Accession
