Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Helen “Kami” Lee served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a health program in northern Namibia from 2006-9 and as a Response Volunteer supporting organizational development in 2010. She first applied for the Peace Corps while in high school, was accepted when she graduated from college, but didn’t serve until she was 62 after living in Guatemala for many years. She tells many stories about her work in AIDS prevention for 2 years with the Shambyu Health Center and for one year with IRDNC, a Namibian NGO, in the Buffalo Game Reserve. In Shambyu, she helped secure assistance in building a well and worked with Rotary on a project with albinos. She says that people welcomed and trusted her more because she was an older woman. In Cameroon, she helped Reach Out, a community-centered Cameroonian NGO, strengthen their communications capacity. After Peace Corps she worked in several countries for Doctors Without Borders.
