Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Carson Walker, nee Coleman, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Grenada, West Indies, from 2001 to 2003 in the Education Program. Carson learned about Peace Corps as a child when Peace Corps trained fisheries volunteers in her community in South Carolina. While studying speech pathology at Winthrop College she had a desire to experience cultural diversity, and applied to Peace Corps. She was selected for training group EC-68, and began training in St. Lucia. In Grenada she was assigned to St Andrews Special Education School in Grenville. She lived in nearby Ford. Her integration into the community was aided by a host family that she stayed with for some time before finding her own place. Carson taught special needs children in grades 1 through 12. Carson talks about her community, her work, and friendships she developed with children. Toward the end of her service Carson was engaged to a local man, and they married after returning to the U.S. She maintains close ties to Grenada, and has returned several times. Carson earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina Carolina, and continues to work in Special Education.
