Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Deana Murtha served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the English Language Program in Lithuania from 1995 to 1997. Originally from New Jersey, she applied for the Peace Corps while she was working in a group home for mentally disabled adults after receiving her degree in Communication with a minor in Education from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Upon completion of training in Vilnius, she was posted to the town of Naujoji Akmene in Northern Lithuania. Deana was assigned to teach English as a Foreign Language at Secondary School No.2. After completion of service, she traveled to Poland to obtain her Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from International House. When she arrived back in the US, she continued teaching English as a second language in various schools across the country. She now lives in New York and works as the Senior Director of Development and Communications for New York Common Pantry.
