Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Peter Phillips was a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador 1975-1976 and a Peace Corps Response Volunteer in the Philippines 2016-2017. In El Salvador, Peter participated in the 1970s PC-Smithsonian Environmental Program allowing him to simultaneously be a University of Massachusetts master’s student. His Jiquilisco Bay marine fisheries survey was the foundation of his thesis and his fish collection is housed at the Smithsonian Division of Fishes Collection. His counterpart was also a master’s student at the University of El Salvador. In the Philippines, Peter was a Response volunteer 2016-2017. At Bohol Island State University, he taught a research methods class to fisheries biology students and designed a fisheries teaching laboratory. Both his countries of service suffered civil unrest. In El Salvador, guerrilla activity and general civil unrest complicated Peter’s field research. In the Philippines, a rebel insurgency forced his evacuation hours after his closing ceremony.
