Interview Summary

Letila Matakibau worked as a Language and Culture Facilitator (LCF) for Peace Corps Fiji. She began in 1981 with training group Fiji-49, and continued through group Fiji 60. Letila married another LCF, Semiti Matakibau. She re-joined Peace Corps from 2010 to 2018. Letila is from Yaro village on Malolo island, and has family ties to Wailevu on Vanua Levu. She grew up on Taveuni Island, where she had several PCV teachers. When she moved to Suva she responded to a classified ad and applied to work at Peace Corps. She was excited to have the opportunity to teach her language and culture. The interview discusses Letila’s work, her interactions with trainees, and the close friendships she formed with PCVs and other Peace Corps staff.
