Interview with Audrey Huetteman, January 17, 2024

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Audrey Huetteman served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco from 2017-2019 in a Youth in Development Program. She knew about the Peace Corps because her parents served as PCVs in Nepal. She applied to serve in Morocco because the program matched her experience as a camp counselor. She discusses difficulty with language training and not being sure she liked Morocco until she reached Ait Yahya Oulla, her assigned site where she fell in love with the country and the extended family of her counterpart with whom she lived. She worked with Arkhbil, a local NGO helping establish a sewing program which empowered 40 women to earn money and helped them establish cooperatives. She learned ‘the beauty of vulnerability”– the deep loving relationships you can form if you open yourself up to others, even if they appear so different. After Peace Corps, she started an NGO in Morocco where she lives and supports weaving cooperatives for women.
