Childhood reading; enlisted in Army in September, 1968; basic training; AIT at Fort Polk-- Louisiana; family's reaction to his assignment to Vietnam; assigned to the First Infantry Division; night patrols; receiving a "Dear John" letter; re-enlisting and going to Hong Kong for R&R; assignment to Cam Ranh Bay; fear during combat; smoking marijuana in the field; "newbies"; meeting his brother in Da Nang; confusion in identifying the enemy; homecoming reception; adjustment to civilian life; battling alcoholism.
