Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Casey Ritter served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine from 2017 to 2019, in the Education Program (TEFL). Casey first heard of Peace Corps at a young age from her grandfather, who didn’t serve but wished he had. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma Casey worked for a couple of years before applying. Ukraine was her first preference. Her cohort, Ukraine 52, trained in Irpin and Novohuivyns'ke. Casey was assigned to teach English in Chervonohrad. Secondary projects included after school English clubs, and an adult English club. She helped organize a school summer camp, assisted with a baseball camp, and an International Youth Culture Festival. She also conducted training for teachers in the use of critical thinking in the classroom. Casey is active in refugee assistance for Ukraine. Her host mother, now a refugee, lives with her in Texas. Casey spearheaded the publication of a cookbook, Babusya’s Kitchen, as a fundraiser for the RPCV Alliance for Ukraine. Book sales have earned over $100,000 for grants in Ukraine.
