Interview Summary

Shelby Watts was born in 1941 in Hallie, Kentucky in Letcher County. His father died in 1942, when Watts was very young. He grew up on a subsistence farm with his mother and seven brothers and sisters. He talks about going to school and his and his siblings' education. He talks about the potential for developing the agriculture industry in Letcher County, and explains that the potential goes unrecognized and that people lack the knowledge and the funds to start out farming. He talks about raising cattle and the costs of feeding them.
