Interview with George Charles Garrison, February 4, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
George Garrison served in Iran, 1972-1974, teaching English at a boys’ high school. George’s reasons for joining Peace Corps included JFK’s invitation to "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." George's pre-service training was in Hamadan, site of ancient Ganjnameh cuneiform inscriptions of Xerxes and Dariush. His permanent site was Khonsar, where he taught at the high school (sharing half his scheduled hours with Iranian counterparts), tutored community leaders, and started a successful English Club to introduce his students to the outside world. He also helped the daughter of a friend win a college scholarship. Peace Corps “jump-started” his career as an English teacher. On completion of his service, he returned to the Mideast for 16 years teaching English and working on Defense contracts in Isfahan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.Interview Accession
